Corrective Exercise Vs Physiotherapy

Corrective Exercise vs Physiotherapy - A Complete Overview

While physiotherapists and exercise physiologists such as myself work in a similar field, it is difficult to dissect and define the differences between both positions. The reason is that both share many of the same features and values. They both cover a similar broad scope in the field and both are professionally trained. These professions overlap a great deal and for the average person, you might find the treatment provided from either is exceptional.

I am a qualified CHEK Practitioner and Personal trainer with over a decade of experience in corrective exercise knowledge some have considered me to be an exercise physiologist because of the extent of my furthered education in corrective exercise with the CHEK institute. I have been recognised as someone an individual comes to when all else fails. I am somewhat their last resort in trying to help with an injury. But to give you a better understanding, we'll take a moment to explore both professions briefly. This will help you to gain more insight into the realm of corrective exercise and physiotherapy and the brand I have created at Inpower Fitness In St Leonards.

Physiotherapist

The physiotherapist plays a key role in allied health. Their education consists of 4 years at a University that provides an in depth understanding of the musculoskeletal system. This is their main area of focus. They handle the prevention, treatment and the management of musculoskeletal disorders. Some professionals do extend their time in college and focus on areas of specialty in addition to the musculoskeletal system. This includes rehabilitation for the cardiovascular, pulmonary and neurological systems. Specialists may also focus on targeted areas like pediatric injuries or sports injuries.

Treatment methods for the physiotherapist will vary from one professional to the next. Commonly, these individuals will take advantage of things like therapeutic exercise, acupuncture, joint manipulation and mobilization, massage and similar treatments. Continued education is required in this position in order to remain accredited.

Exercise Physiology

Exercise physiology is a different approach to what a traditional physiotherapist handles. These individuals also require a 4 year degree from a University. Their focus is on corrective exercise as part of their treatment process. These professionals use exercises to combat injury, prevent chronic disease and to better manage the body. Their understanding is on the impact of exercise and how it impacts a person's overall health and how it can be used for healing.

Like other healthcare professions, exercise physiologists may have areas of specialty within their role. Professionals who focus on behaviour and lifestyle modification can be found in both private and public health. When you meet with this professional, they will go over any areas of concern and will review the targeted areas you need to work on for optimum health. They too must keep up with the changing world of healthcare and continue their education in order to remain accredited.

Are These Two Roles Just Personal Trainers?

A common misconception is that a physiologist and an exercise physiologist are just a trumped up version of a personal trainer. The truth is that are not. They both deal with the healing and rehabilitation of the body. A personal trainer is different in the fact that they don't require a college education. While they need to have some degree of understanding about the human body, there is no four year program for it. A person may become accredited through a national program to boost their visibility and to work in some national chains in this role. The program guarantees the person will receive their certification at the end of the course which I think is ridiculous considering the importance they play in everyone's lives and wellbeing. Their focus is simply on motivating their clients to exercise and to boost their fitness levels. This isn't done to treat or cure any diseases the individual may have.

What About a CHEK Practitioner?

There's a good chance you've heard the term CHECK Practitioner. But what does that mean? CHEK is not only the last name of Paul Check who is an important part of the founding community. It also stands for Corrective Holistic Exercise Kinesiology. The CHEK Institute features the experience and expertise of Paul's 25+ years of experience as a holistic health coach.

While there is a lot of positive information out there about CHEK practitioners, it is important to understand that some of the comprehensive healing practices are more diverse than you would expect from a Personal Trainer or physiologist. One who studies deep into the CHEK Levels gains a focus on more than just the physical and mental side of things, with an included aspect of digging into the spiritual health of a person.

The program is also not one a person completes in a few months. Like traditional physiology courses, practitioners are required to go through several years of training to earn their certification. Even with the years of training, those who become a CHEK practitioners are still required to continue to learn and gain more of an understanding of the practice. A certification and license is then maintained through continued education for these individuals.

Because of the watchful eyes on this practice, participants do go through a comprehensive evaluation, coaching and treatment process. This program does not guarantee that those who attend will receive certification. Like a traditional college course, the information is presented to the student and certification is then awarded to those who have shown they have a deep understanding of the program and have completed the individual sections of the course.

As they complete the program, the student CHEK practitioner goes through an extensive assessment process. This views their education and training and explores their work with the patients and their understanding of the human body. This includes the complex interrelated systems and the impact they have on each other. The CHEK practitioner will then use assessment tools to help them diagnose their patients to provide exceptional care. This is done through a physical examination of the individual and an in depth questionnaire that pinpoints specific areas of concern the individual may be dealing with. Like traditional physiologists, the CHEK practitioner specializes in an area that is unique to themselves.

Take The Time to Research the Professional You're Working With

When you deal with physiotherapists, you need to understand that they are not all the same. Each professional will have their own area of expertise and you need to ensure that it aligns with what you need. While someone may be the best in their field, it doesn't mean much if they are focusing on an area that isn't explicitly what you need.

For example, if you find a physiotherapist that is an expert in the lower body, they wouldn't be a good match for the upper body. While they could help you to treat the underlying issues, they wouldn't have the depth of knowledge of someone who focuses more heavily in that target area.

Another thing to consider is the approach these professionals take to the injuries themselves. Not every professional will address the underlying cause of your concern. In some cases, they'll just fix the symptoms associated with the problem, while ignoring the big picture. While this can bring temporary relief it is short lived and doesn't help you to fully heal. That is my biggest issue. That why I continued my education on Myofascial lines.

Myofascial Lines are Important

Myofascial lines are an important part of this process. They help the body to correctly move, build stability and to improve coordination. When you train the body to boost endurance and awareness, these areas are critically important. With strength and stability in place, you can help to reduce pain and structural weaknesses. As in most cases, these are the underlying sections that are contributing to the overall problem.

A good way to look at this is to view it as a chain of events in the body. When you experience injuries or movement limitations, areas of the body become weaker and performance decreases. An injury with a hamstring, for example, could cause you difficulty with your calves and even the lower back.

When you look at your body, there are eight major myofascial lines in the body. There is the spiral line that runs from the neck to the feet, the arm line that runs along the arms, the superficial front line that runs through the centre of the chest down the legs, and on a deeper level, you have the front line that follows the deep tissue muscles of the body. There's also a later line that runs along both sides of the body, and a superficial back line that runs from the head to the base of the feet on the back side of the body.

The Fascial System is Complex

To say the fascial system is complex is an understatement. Today, many scientists are still puzzled by the complexity of these systems. While there is an understanding of the logical consequences associated with them and injury, there are still questions about the impact they can have when a part of strength training.

What they do know is that the fascia system is very similar to the internet. They surround the organs and transmit information from one end of the body to the next. They allow the body to move with ease and create minimal friction. They are an oily tissue that for years wasn't viewed as being much more than "meat" on the body. In recent years, the science community has focused more heavily on this system and taken a keen interest in it. They have realized there are major components to it that cannot be overlooked. First, they are collagen fibers that have an incredible amount of strength to them. The elastin in these is very similar to a rubber band. This allows them more elasticity and to better encase the organs and help to hold them in place. The water which remains between these fibers is what helps them to glide smoothly, and is one of the reasons why they are able to glide between and over each other with ease.

Fascia Facts You Need to Know

There are some important fascia facts that are important in your understanding of the human body. As you explore corrective exercise more, these each play a pivotal role.

Fascia are a 3D structural support system for your organs.
They minimize the stress experienced by bones, joints and muscles.
These muscles help the body to function more efficiently and help to reduce energy consumption.
Will remodel themselves to help improve movement and reduce the risk of stress based injuries in the muscles of the body.
Have a unique ability to heal themselves and to constantly repair as necessary.
They act independently of the central nervous system. In fact, they use gravity to help maintain tension and shape, which allows us to maintain certain movements and postures with ease.
Allows the body to train as a whole, rather than individual sections. This is because their design allows the entire body to participate in certain movements and this helps to boost physical fitness and health.
As we look at the fascia, we need to understand that myofascial lines are a critical part of our body's mobility. As we improve them and train, we are able to better function and move utilizing three planes of motion. When exercising, it is critical to continue to work the entire system at all times to improve their durability and strength. You'll find that as they develop more, you also have a better speed than if you weren't optimizing the function of the fascia.

Dos and Don'ts of Training this Neuromyofascial Web

Do use variation rather than repetition, to help smooth out the fascia.
Don't use repetitive motion exercises that work the same fascial line too frequently in a single workout.
Do work the entire body with your movements. The key here is to engage and train the system.
Don't work out with upper level loads all the time. This will help to prevent injury.
Do teach your body adaptive movements.
Don't train at the same tempo for each session, as it limits growth and development.
Corrective Exercises and Stretches that are More Beneficial to Rehabilitation

Corrective exercises and stretches work together and independent of each other. To understand that, you need to understand the difference between both of them.

Rehabilitation is a process that is essential in the treatment of an injury. It is designed to help promote the recovery of ligaments, muscles and tendons, while providing the body with the functional stability needed to heal. Injuries prevent the body from functioning properly and form an internal weakness. To heal, the body needs to go beyond these injuries and learn to function again. This process is essentially the reconditioning and strengthening of the internal elements to a preinjury state.

Corrective exercise ties into that. This is an exercise that is designed to improve biomechanics and to correct posture. Unlike rehabilitation, this takes a corrective action against improper biomechanics. These are specific to the actual individuals needs and the corrective exercises are adjusted based on these needs. This is often done with a key set of exercises that are determined essential for that individual.

Corrective exercises and stretches are more beneficial to people than rehabilitation exercise. The reason is they not only strengthen muscles that have become weak, but they also help to fix the muscle imbalances in the body that can lead to injury in the first place. This reduces the risk of the body becoming injured against and can help to restore perfect health.

A Look at Some Corrective Exercises

To gain some insight into corrective exercises, it is important to look at an example of them. The first is the Golf Ball Roll. This exercise helps to address musculoskeletal deviations that can lead to both over pronation and chronic pain in the body. This is caused by the foot flattening under the weight of the body and impacting the mid line.

This corrective exercise is simple. Take a golf ball and place it on the base of your foot. Now roll the ball around on the sore spots of the foot. This can be done for 30 seconds to a minute on each foot. Do this standing up and you'll experience results in just a few day. Continue to do this to continue to improve the health of your feet. Just avoid putting too much pressure on your foot.

Roller Quadriceps are designed to address the four quadriceps in the upper leg. Three of them are located at the top of the leg, and stretch to the kneecap. The fourth, known as the rectus femoris, runs from the pelvic area to the knee cap. This muscle is responsible for the flexing in the hip. This includes the ability to extend it when sitting, or to stand up properly. When damaged, it can prevent a person from changing position and can cause stress to the lumbar spine, damage can also result in severe lower back pain. An effective corrective exercise requires a foam roller to be placed perpendicular to your thigh as you lie on it. Roll your body over the foam roller in areas where there is soreness and use your body weight to hold you in place in these sections for about a minute each. Do this daily for optimum results.

The iliotibial band is another area that can benefit from corrective exercise. This is the band that connects the gluteus maximus to the lower leg. When the body is free from injury, these muscles will work together and allow you to easily rotate your foot. When the muscles experience over pronation, this can cause these muscles to work ineffectively. That may lead to irritation and possibly inflammation. Fortunately, this corrective exercise can help to improve the functioning. Just note that you need to avoid the knee joints when doing this movement as it can cause damage to the knee. All you need to do is take the roller and lie it perpendicular on the floor. Take the side of your thigh and lie on it. Roll over the sore sections of the leg and hold your body weight against those areas for a minute or two daily. You'll begin to notice a vast improvement in just a few short days.

With more time spent in front of a television, sitting at a computer and even driving, the gluteal complex is experiencing more stress and strain. As these muscles become weaker, it can make walking and other simple tasks hard. But many of those concerns can be addressed with a simple baseball. All you do is lie on your back with your knees bent. Take a baseball and roll it around under your buttocks. Stop and hold the baseball at these spots for a few minutes and then continue. If you don't have a baseball, a tennis ball will work fine for this corrective exercise. It is important you keep your knees bent at all times to avoid hyperextending your lumbar spine, which may result in further injury.

Excessive thoracic kyphosis is one of the most common conditions that lead to upper back pain. This is the result of chronic stress and sitting at a computer for long periods of time. With this condition, you begin to experience rounding in the area of the shoulders, neck and head. When you stand, the erect spine then experiences a multitude of tension and can lead to further problems. To address this, you can take a pair of tennis balls and place each on one of the sides of your spine. Ideally, this placement is in the mid to upper section of your back. You then support your head and bend your knees as you lie on the balls. You can then raise your pelvis and you flatten the lower back. Move along the balls until you find a sore spot. Then hold the position for 30 seconds. Keep doing this until you have worked the balls around the spine and the upper back. It is important to note that if you feel any extreme pain, you must cease this process at once, as it may be linked to an underlying condition with the spine.

Your daily activities may be impacting your spine. Things like lunging, squatting and even walking, require you to utilize different sections of the body. This includes your ankles. When they are working properly, the ankles allow you to move forward and to bend as needed to adjust to different positions. When they become restricted, the ankle dorsiflex can cause pain and lead to an inability to move. Fortunately, there is a corrective exercise for this concern. All you need to do is to take a BOSU ball and stand erect next to it. Take your heel and place it on the back of the ball. Then with the heel in a downward position, begin to rotate the back of the leg in an outward motion. Do this to loosen up the muscles and to improve their function. Just be sure to go slowly and avoid forcing the muscle that can lead to further injury of the body.

Corrective exercises are an essential part of keeping the body healthy and limber. When you utilize them with an expert, you are able to restore the function of the body and to ensure you have a full range of motion in place. Keep these exercises in mind the next time you are experiencing a degree of pain, and consider working closely with a specialist to further address any underlying concerns you may have. Just remember that no physical activities should be started without consulting with your physician first. They will understand your unique healthcare needs and will address any potential concerns that they might have.

What Is Physiotherapy and Is It Something You Should Consider for Your Pain?

Whether due to trauma or repetitive motion, which over time can cause injury, the result is the same: pain and limited range of physical movement in that region of your body. The method you use for treatment is the focus of this article. We are human beings who dislike any deterioration in our health and most of us will look for the easiest and quickest means of relieving the discomfort. Against our better judgment, rather than seek the advice of a doctor, we open a bottle of something - generally speaking something that is available over the counter, in hopes of feeling normal and pain-free. While this is not the worst thing you can do, after all, many over the counter drugs contain an anti-inflammatory, which will assist in reducing the throbbing and swelling, depending upon the severity, you may need something more to encourage healthy tissue and/or muscle. If you are noticing that things are not improving, it is time to see what sort of rehabilitation physiotherapists can offer you. The last thing you want is something that is relatively simple to treat with physiotherapy becoming such a nuisance that you find yourself in constant pain or in need of surgery.

Trauma

If your pain is the result of sudden impact, perhaps a car accident or falling on an ice patch whilst walking, this is quickly identifiable. You experience trauma and whether it is immediate or does not occur for another two or three days, the site of the crash or blow swells and the discomfort is unbearable. Indeed, so much so, you are unable to ignore it. Quite often if you are unsuccessful in getting relief as quickly as you might like, you arrange a visit with your doctor who will suggest various forms of treatment, the most common of which is physiotherapy. This is excellent advice because quite frankly analgesics can only do so much. Although they do offer temporary relief, they are just that: temporary. Anything in pill form is designed to treat the symptoms, but to see any actual improvement in your overall health, if your doctor has suggested physiotherapy; you will see benefits that are not only immediate, but also permanent.

Repetitive Motion Disorder/Syndrome

What happens when one day, seemingly out of nowhere and for no discernible reason, you wake up with your wrists swollen or your knees aching or with a stiff elbow? Although you may not trace it to something specific, such as a fall or accident, you have pain and swelling that suggests you have some disability that must immediately be addressed. Indeed it was easy to reach into your highest cupboards the other day; today doing so causes you considerable agony. Maybe you found that when you work at the computer all day, as the majority of professionals do, over prolonged periods of time you notice that your wrists just hurt! An avid runner for many years, what used to give you relief from stress and be enjoyable is no longer either. "What happened?" you ask yourself.

When symptoms such as these cannot be traced back to a specific event, the likely culprit can often be a repetitive motion syndrome, such as carpel tunnel disorder or tendonitis. What has occurred in this instance is that with the continued motion of running, typing, playing tennis or something along these lines that is repeated numerous times throughout the day over a period of years has caused injury to that region of your body. Again, similar to a sudden impact injury, we are inclined to first self medicate with a pill and when this proves useless, we see a doctor. He or she will more often than not suggest you see a group of physiotherapists who will work wonders on your health and suggest a specific form of treatment to rid you of your disability.

What Can Physiotherapy Do For You?

Depending on the severity, your rehabilitation process may be slow or your results immediate. However they will be permanent and more importantly, have you avoiding surgery. Your physiotherapists will target the area with specific exercises whose purpose is to strengthen the muscles and tendons at the injury site. As an example, if you have carpel tunnel syndrome, the result of typing on the computer 8 hours a day, five days a week, your physiotherapists will both work to target the area, thus decrease the discomfort but also teach you new ways to type, to avoid future injury. Sometimes part of physiotherapy might be to teach you to move your arm, knew, elbow or other affected area to move in the opposite motion.

As an example, when your body is letting you know that it wants you to stop doing whatever is causing the pain, with exercises given to you by the physiotherapists, you will counter the discomfort by doing the opposite motion. This is just one of numerous exercises you that will benefit you in your rehabilitation and help restore you back to health.

The important thing to understand about doing anything physical is that it can result in injury, pain and sometimes disability. Treating the symptoms will only offer you temporary relief. Seeing physiotherapists will help get you started on a treatment program that will net you lasting and permanent results. As the expression goes, "Anything worth having is worth working toward", in this vein, please do not anticipate anything to be instant. Whether you are considering physiotherapy for trauma or a repetitive motion disorder, be patient, do the exercises that are prescribed to you and you'll soon reap the benefits that physiotherapy has to offer.

Wedding Videography - Catching the Bride On That Special Day

Capturing the Bride on Her Special Day

I wanted to discuss the most important day of many women's lives - her wedding day. It's that same cliche we hear constantly but it is true, so many women plan this day for years, dream about that perfect day with the dress, the venue, the cake and of course (hopefully!) the perfect groom.

Each wedding is individual and the couple will create a day that reflects their personal tastes and ideas of romance. However whether it is a small intimate ceremony with close friends and family, or a huge celebration with hundreds of guests, there will always be strangers amongst the guests in the form the wedding media. Surrounded by loved ones there are the photographer (and in my case videographer) snuggled away between the guests desperately trying to capture the day. My job as the wedding videographer on paper is quite simple - to film the day and create a video that can be watched time and time again to revive the memories of the day.

There are many reasons why I think a wedding video is important - it can be shown to family and friends who could not present, it provides elements that simply cannot be caught in still photography and can be something very special in times of hardship to hear those vows, see those smiles and revive the memories of that day. I therefore take the job very seriously, and while everyone is laughing, smiling and sipping champagne, I am silently moving around the party like a ghost whispering through the venue to catch that moment. There is always that moment. For example... during the bridal preparations on a recent wedding shoot the aunt of the bride entered the room. I am a small independent film maker but I try to make sure I have enough memory on the CF cards to keep the cameras rolling 90% of the time. After studying documentary as a specialism at university you soon learn that you often catch the best footage when you don't realise so KEEP THE CAMERAS ROLLING! And then grab one if there is even a hint of something interesting happening. In this case the young brides grandmother had recently passed.

The room was empty except the bride herself and a young bridesmaid whilst the other members of her party prepared themselves in the ornately presented, designated dressing rooms. The aunt handed the bride a very special keepsake, a handmade lace pouch that was made up from small sections of the all the dresses of the previous female family members wedding dresses, started by her grandmother. It was her something old and was attached delicately to her white rose and diamante bouquet. The moment was extremely touching, you really did have to be there, but with eyes welling with tears, mouth bursting wide with smiles and hearts full of loving memories it was a moment that the bride did not realise she would get to see again. However I was there, like a chameleon fading into the background, secretly filming these intimate moments, so that she could forever remember a moment that meant everything to her that morning. How rewarding for me to see her face light up at getting to watch the moments she thought were lost forever. How wonderful that she could enjoy that moment with her aunt, remembering her grandmother on her own in private and then share it afterwards with her family members. How individual is that moment...

Each bride is unique. And lets be honest whilst some grooms are very hands on and some enjoy being in the limelight - it is more often than not the bride who is the star of the show and therefore the wedding video. Each ceremony is special and I always do my best to capture their day perfectly but the ceremony, speeches, cake cutting, first dance tends to run smoothly and on a standard format and there are angles and edits that will always work best. The vows are romantic, tear jerking and beautiful where there is an air of genuine love, happiness and relief that is caught on the camera, in the twinkling of eyes, the twitching of fingers and shaking of hands, and the catch of words through smiles, sobs and singing.

It is easy on video to capture this, to let the emotions pour from the couple and the congregation and let the cameras roll and take it all in. The speeches run traditionally from father of the bride to groom to best men and maid of honour and everyone begins to relax and enjoy themselves. It makes for fabulous, fun shooting. I love being a part of it. However it really is the bridal preparations where I come into my element. This is where you capture that raw emotion pre-vows. My favourite fading end to a bridal preparation video was the bride with her legs shaking, taking deep breaths and holding her face in her hands. Why? Because she had been so nervous all morning. I had spent the morning watching, filming, capturing as her mother and bridal party fussed around her all morning, fixing shoes, tidying hair, draping shiny pearls, tiaras and veils over her while she tried to stop herself from dashing off to the bathroom.

She smiled politely, she went through the motions of her preparation, and then waited... She was quiet, reserved and absolutely stunning in her elegant, sleek white gown. The room emptied and she was left to wait for her father to escort her down to her new groom. Before I dashed down to the cameras set up for the ceremony I stayed, quietly, and just filmed. It was breath-takingly beautiful. My heart slowed, my hands sweated and my eyes found the shots. It was her, I captured her, and the genuine, desperate emotions that poured from her. It was stunning and the transition from her in this nervous, expectant state to her walking down that aisle, to seeing her groom there waiting for her, to him taking her hands and them making that first contact for 24 hours made for the most incredible footage. All that relief flowing like burst river of joy. The love that sparkled and glistened from her was outstanding and whilst I am there, just doing my job, I can't help but feel that I am lucky to be in the presence of something special.

Weddings, and brides, like this are wonderful. They make editing a pleasure and I genuinely feel like I have created something special myself. It is not always this easy. Sometimes the bridal preparation is hectic. Busy women with hoards of silky materials, flurries of petals and an abundance of hair spray dipping in and out of shot. Being a female producer I do feel that I am in a privileged in being granted access as a woman to some of the more private and intimate preparations. It gives me a massive advantage - and even though I am not myself married - I feel like I can identify with the bride in a way that only another woman can.

I can never guess, in our pre-wedding consultation, what the bride will be like before her wedding. Some of the most confident women crumble and some of the demure brides turn their nerves into a comedy sketch. I love to capture them in the butterfly like transformation from normal to bride. Every videographer will have their own techniques and ideas on how to best film weddings. I enjoy discussing what makes the perfect wedding video. I personally think it is the pre-wedding footage. I have of course the bride - but the groom preparations can be equally emotional and entertaining. Thus far I have not had many opportunities to film the groom pre wedding but hope to in the future. The ceremony is magical, the post wedding celebrations are entertaining. The pre-wedding is genuine, uncensored. I treat it like documentary filming, almost fly-on-the-wall style. I want to see people open up, break down and transform. I let the events unfold in front of me without staging or interaction, I just make sure I am there, capturing it all on video. The whole process is mesmerising. I can not recommend highly enough to brides to be to have this service at the wedding, it is something you will not regret and never forget if you have it captured.

I would love to hear other film makers ideas on the subject as well as brides. I find it fascinating to film weddings; and i didn't think I would, I thought it would just be a job. It is a much more intimate, and expressive process. I am creating something unique, special and lasting and I absolutely love being a part of each couples wedding day.

Wedding Videography Companies - Honesty and Integrity Matters

Affordable wedding videography singapore Companies - Honesty and Integrity Matters

There's been a lot of interest lately for wedding videographers, but not necessarily for the best of reasons. One particular urban wedding company promised much and delivered little. Then they took the money and ran, and violated the trust of unfortunate engaged couples who believed them. They have now disappeared, and the wedding industry is better for their absence.

For me, the story began over a year ago when I got an email from a person I knew as a wedding videographer to meet with him and hear about a proposal he had for me. He wouldn't discuss it on the phone, other than to say it was a "great opportunity" that I "would not want to miss out on." I decided to set aside the time to hear what he had to say.

After arriving at the time and place he designated, I was greeted with a big phony smile and introduced to a colleague of his who supposedly had flown in just to meet with me, or at least that is what I was led to believe. The hair on the back of my neck was already beginning to stand up when the wedding videographer (we'll just call him "Thad") said that his friend (we'll just call him "Mr. Creepy") was there to observe, and for the remainder of the meeting Mr. Creepy just sat there with a disturbing look on his face listening intently as Thad went through his passive/aggressive presentation. I later learned that I was not the only one to receive the sales pitch that day, but that's beside the point.

He began by complimenting me on what a great job I was doing as a wedding and event DJ, and my wife and I as wedding videographers (he was not aware of the fact that we had already branched out into wedding photography) while pointing out that his company dominated the wedding business and were taking over nationwide with Mr. Creepy. Apparently there would be no room for other wedding vendors after their plan to take over, and this would be my only chance to get in on the ground floor with them. He noted the accolades and awards that my wife and I have gathered in our almost 10 years in business, and even acknowledged that he was aware of my ability and dedication. He then warned me it was all about to come to an abrupt end unless I went along with his offer. Cue dramatic music bum-pa-bum!

Mr. Creepy smirked at me when Thad said they had a plan to expand their power and that basically any Videography, Photography, or DJ job in any state they were doing business would go through them as brokers. He claimed to have a crack team of SEO experts who would insure that their website would be the only one seen on Google. The only perceived threat to them was WeddingWire, and the strategy there would be simply to buy out all of the top spots to gain preferred placement. Besides, he figured that any potential client looking at them would be crazy to go anywhere else. I guess they figured there was no such thing as free will in the marketplace.

Here's where I fit into their plan. I would close my business, and surrender any existing or future jobs to them. In return, I could be their DJ manager. They would lowball the price to get all the available work. He claimed they had all sorts of DJ talent waiting to fly anywhere to fulfill the jobs. When I questioned this, he actually said "we can get all the chumps we need because they are desperate for work." They would collect the deposits from clients (half up front,) pay the DJs a pittance, and give me a salary to insure that everything went smoothly.

He thought that they already had all the videography and photography jobs wrapped up for themselves, and expanding into domination of the DJ field would be their next logical step. He pointed out that I would not be able to get any more wedding video, photo, or DJ work on my own, as that would all be going to them now.

He may have said some other outrageous things, but I was already done listening and looking for a way out. I may be old-fashioned, but I believe honesty and integrity mean something and there was none to be had here.

As I was leaving, I remember Thad saying we would be out of business as soon as they implemented their plan, and this would be the last chance I had to join their team. Shortly afterward, I saw their ads begin to appear on the internet and their website promising the best DJ, Photography and Videography service for the lowest price. It appeared their conquest had begun.

I'll admit they took a lot of work away from us for a while. I would call or email with prospective Brides and Grooms who told me they decided to book with another company offering a great deal. They had already put half down on a deposit and were convinced they were choosing the right vendor to help with their special day. I worked alongside this company on a few occasions when the couple had chosen us for one service and the other guys for another. I even had a few of their independent contractors tell me about all the money they were going to make with this wedding company. They had been promised to be paid well for their hard work, although most of them had yet to receive payment for their services.

Then it came. They collected as much money as they could while paying out as little as possible. They kept people happy until they decided to strike. Suddenly they were gone! Phone disconnected and no response to emails, no-show at contracted events and no recourse for customers. They seemingly disappeared off the face off the earth, but apparently indicated to WeddingWire that "they are no longer in business." According to multiple complaints, the money is gone and the clients have been left high and dry. To add insult to injury, their many website listings now redirect to porn websites. Ouch!

The good news is that the previous story is an extreme and unfortunate example, as most reputable companies want to do a good job and maintain a positive reputation after your event. A legitimate business has little interest in legal difficulty, but the sad fact is there are bad guys out there who are more interested in pulling a fast one. Fortunately, there are several measures that can be taken to minimize the risk.

First is using a contract signed by both parties. It does not necessarily need to be complicated, but should include the basics of date, time and location of event, and terms. It should also include a clause concerning what will happen in the event of illness or unforeseen circumstances that would prevent performance.

Second is working with an established business that has a history measured in years, not months. The longer a business has been around, the more likely they will be there when your event comes around.

Third has to do with integrity, which can often be indicated by reputation. Personal recommendations from friends and family are great. In the absence of that, online reviews from a trusted and verified source can be quite helpful. On a side note, many brides and grooms review a group of vendors after an event, so looking for a set of reviews on a certain date can be a good idea.

Another good line of defense is using a credit card for the deposit payment. Disputes can be mediated through your credit card company and often resolved to your benefit if your vendor does not show up to your event or has otherwise nefarious intentions. PayPal offers some measure of protection, but is currently limited to 45 days from the transaction date.

Wedding Videography - How Much to Spend and What to Expect

When planning your wedding you are going to make a lot of difficult decisions to stay within your budget and still have your dream wedding. One of these decisions is likely to be how much money (if any) to invest in a wedding videographer. In this article I will discuss some of the details of what you are paying for and what you should expect to get from your wedding videographer.

When shopping around for a videographer you will find a very wide range of prices ranging from maybe as low as $600 to as much as $5,000. It is also possible (sometimes) to get a wedding video done for free or conversely to spend tens of thousands with a top production company. The thing you need to remember is, as with anything else, you get what you pay for. So let's go over exactly what that is.

Starting with getting your wedding video done for free. The first question is how. There are two ways to go about it. The first is to ask a friend or relative to videotape your wedding for you. There are of course many drawbacks to this method, the first being that you want your guests to enjoy the celebration and not be working all day. Other drawbacks are that they will not likely be using professional equipment, most likely won't have professional sound equipment (if any) and possibly won't even be using a tripod for stable shots. Other notable drawbacks are likely to be their lack of knowledge of composition and editing skills.

Moving on to the second method of getting free affordable wedding videography singapore, you can post an online classified ad requesting a film/video student to shoot your wedding for experience. This might get you a free wedding video but you will have more luck if you offer a couple hundred bucks. What you can expect from this approach is better (possibly professional) equipment, more footage shot, hopefully better sound and if they are also willing to edit the footage you might get a more watchable video than what your friend/relative would have done. The biggest risk here is that they might not show up, or that they might show up but never finish editing your video. If you go this route, make sure you meet them in advance so that you can determine if they are serious and mature enough to trust with the task. Again, offering some money will help lessen the risk here.

Of course, I don't recommend either of these methods if there is any possible way you can hire a professional. It is a big risk to take with such an important day. Moving on, let's look at what a professional wedding videographer brings to the table.

At the bare minimum, a wedding videographer should have two professional (or prosumer) cameras with which to film the ceremony. At the lowest price levels (anything much under $1,000) you may only get one camera, but it is important to note that a one camera shoot will look like a home movie. You need the second camera angle to be able to edit out camera zooms, movements and refocusing without missing any of the content. A wedding videographer will have a way to place a microphone on the groom to record your vows. This may be a wireless microphone or a pocket recorder with a clip-on mic. At any price level, if they say they will record your vows with the mic. that's built into their camera, move on to the next videographer on your list.

When determining if the price is right for a particular videographer there are many things to take into consideration. Keep in mind that unlike most of your vendors, your videographers work has only just begun when the wedding day ends. If they are covering 8 hrs. of your wedding day they will likely be spending 40 or more hours editing your footage and producing your DVD. Take a close look at the details of your package to see what you are paying for. No two videographers package their product exactly the same way.

One thing you will come across is the terms cinematic and documentary style. These are very subjective terms and mean different things to different videographers so it's important to both view samples of their work and to discuss their approach. A cinematic style wedding video in general will be more artistic, may involve more expensive equipment and more camera operators or it may just be edited differently. A documentary style video may cost less, is generally less creative in the editing and may not involve the use of the same type of equipment. Again this all depends on who you talk to, so if you see these terms go ahead and ask what they mean.

The most important thing when making this decision is simply, do you like their videos. If you like sample videos that you have seen online, ask them for a full length demo DVD. This will give you the clearest idea of what your paying for, and you will be amazed at the difference from one videographer to the next. Ultimately it doesn't matter if they come in with steadicam operators, studio lighting and an 8 man crew, if you don't like the product that they produce.

So in conclusion: Free Videography - a roll of the dice, but better than nothing.

Under $1000 - Expect quality comparable with a home movie but probably better sound, and it's still a lot of hard work that you aren't asking a relative to do for free.

From $1000 - $2000 - There is a huge variety of quality in this range, and it varies from city to city. Expect professional equipment, decent sound and competent editing, but watch the demo videos. Find out what the compromise is, less equipment, less experience, less skills etc. Ask around and read reviews if possible and make sure you are comfortable with this person.

$2000 -$3500 - Simply put, find a videographer you like. In most markets you can get whatever you need at this price whether it's high definition, multiple camera angles or just a highly skilled videographer, so watch the demo videos and trust your instincts.

Over $3500 - There are some amazing videographers out there that make wedding videos that look like they truly belong on a movie screen in this price range. You should see the difference in their videos compared with the lower priced company. Expect high end equipment, multiple audio sources, high definition coverage, artistic editing and a beautiful finished product. Again, ask them what you get and watch the demo videos, then relax because you've hired a professional.

I hope this has been a helpful article for your wedding planning and at least raised some questions for you to ask your videographer, if not answered a few. If you have any questions or would like to discuss any of this in more detail just click through to my website and give me a call.

12 Search Engine Optimization Problems to Keep in Mind

SEO consulting for big brand companies with web sites of more than 10,000 or 15,000 pages involves certain unique types of search engine optimization problems. The main problems can be summarized in the following:

1 - Inefficient content management system:

The main problem in most cases lies in the web content management system or how the programmers, webmasters and marketing staff have used to manage the site's content over years. Usually there are a lot of duplicate pages, broken links, missing title tags and many other coding mistakes.

SEO consultants must carefully analyze the whole website and recommend the proper solution to each situation.

2 - Website design and architecture:

Large businesses have a tendency to build very expensive great looking web sites that are not search engine friendly. SEO consultants should concentrate on building a perfect SEO siloing architecture for the whole website and rearrange pages into thematic groups, with proper internal linking.

3- Flash websites:

Flash websites are very attractive to human visitors but they provide very little information to search engine spiders.

4 - Poorly optimized templates:

Large brand sites usually use a template style of optimization by creating one or more optimized templates and then using their huge database to populate each page with the unique information relevant to that page.

The problem can start with how the templates are designed to display, use and reuse the content. A poorly optimized template or a minor glitch within a web site which contains millions of pages can grow from being a minor problem in the beginning to a huge disaster that will prevent search engine spiders from crawling or indexing thousands of pages with great loss in ranking and visibility.

Early detection of these minor problems or glitches will save a lot of time and energy.

5- Lack of relevant keywords in page content:

Big brand companies usually ask "creative" writers to add content and title tags to their pages. These talented writers produce very attractive page content that lack most of the relevant keywords. This type of content is good for the human visitors but has no value at all to search engine spiders. Consequently, these impressive pages will never be found in any search engine results and the thousands of targeted customers looking for these products will never come across these pages.

6 - Dynamic URLs:

Most Large websites use dynamic URLs that lack any keywords. Google and other search engines definitely index these pages but they lose much of their SEO value when there are no relevant keywords in thousands of URLs.

7 - Multiple web sites and duplicate content:

Duplicate content in large sites is usually caused by using and reusing the same content over and over again in different pages.

Moreover, large corporate companies usually create many similar websites and use the same pages on different sites. Duplicate pages on different websites are a more serious problem than duplicate pages on the same site. Google will either demote these sites, parts of them or even take a few of these websites out completely from Google's index.

8 - Wasting time and energy on multiple websites:

Big corporations with multiple websites usually waste much time and energy to maintain the content and link popularity of these sites. Wasting any time or money on these websites will reduce the ability of the main website to compete with other sites for the first page.

There are a few situations that may need more than one website for any company, but generally speaking this is not the ideal situation.

9 - Bureaucracy:

Large companies that have websites with thousands of pages usually have so many people involved in developing and maintaining these large websites.

Any SEO recommendation will typically need a whole series of approvals before any changes can be made. There will always be a lot of bureaucracy, delays, refusals or at least resistance to implementing every SEO recommendation at on level or another.

10 - Priorities:

Most of the executives supervising big websites have not put much thought into search engine optimization. They always had achieved their marketing and sales goals with traditional marketing techniques. They usually do not see SEO as a priority to improve sales. One of the main priorities of an SEO consultant is to convince top executives of the significant effects of search engine optimization on improving traffic and sales. SEO consultants must motivate the company executives to apply an aggressive search engine strategy to achieve first page positions for their relevant keywords in the shortest possible time.

11- Inability to follow up with the latest trends in SEO techniques:

Google changes its algorithm more than 400 times every year, which comes to more than once every day. In a large corporation, every member is busy doing his or her daily duties and activities and has no time to follow up on the latest in the world of search engine optimization. SEO consultants must arrange for continuous education of all the staff involved in the SEO plan.

12 - How long would it take to achieve top search engine placement:

Company executives are usually impatient to see results and success. Explain to every body that SEO consultants have no control on Google spiders or Google algorithm. It takes as long as it takes.

A stable search engine ranking for a competitive keyword can take anywhere from 4-12 months.

What Are the Challenges for SEO Consultants?

Every SEO consultant working on a big brand E-commerce website must not only be excellent at marketing a website, but also capable of explaining to the executive board of directors what are the SEO strategies he is going to use and why they are proven to work. The clients do not need not be experts on search engine optimization. It is necessary to simply inform them of the structural basics of what search engine optimization entails. There are also certain challenges that only an SEO consultant with ample expertise in this field of big brand E-commerce optimization can overcome.

Why Big Brand E-Commerce Websites are not as Successful as "the little guy" in achieving First Page Positions

Big brand businesses are often comprised of a huge number of products and pages - not to mention keywords which can span into the thousands or even millions. Due to the fiercely competitive nature of the online marketplace, it is neither simple nor easy to optimize for every product or service from the bottom up. An SEO consultant must create a major body of content-rich information in order to rise to the top of search engine rankings for every product or service.

Any SEO consultant knows that it is no coincidence that small and medium sized businesses have a better chance of getting to the first pages of Google and other major search engines. With small and medium sized businesses success requires a highly pinpointed, strategic, and consistent flow of search engine optimization techniques. This process is more easily achievable with "the little guys" because they do not have thousands or millions of keywords to optimize.

What SEO Consultants Know that Renders SEO Services an Asset to a Big Brand E-Commerce Website

Any business manager or executive who has attempted to master even one of these components of SEO understands what a massive undertaking search engine marketing can be, and understands why enlisting an SEO expert is quintessential.

Some of the experience and knowledge that SEO consultants possess that make them an asset include:

• How to establish and maintain an algorithmic grasp on search engine behavior
• How to measure and sample data from search engines
• How to efficiently track and manage search rankings
• How to manipulate and optimize content effectively
• How to establish an optimal presence in organic search results

How SEO Consulting Companies Target Large Numbers of Keywords

Perfecting a website's performance for targeted keywords is an intricate process. The challenges for SEO consultants involve breaking down the site into levels, and tracking keyword density and usage within each level.

Recognizing the levels of a website's pages is the first step toward optimizing for specific keywords. As a search engine optimization specialist, your analysis will classify the client's site pages into four levels: the home page, the category pages, the subcategory pages, and the product pages - decrementing in keyword optimization importance, respectively.

Distributing Targeted Keywords among Thousands of Pages

The SEO specialist must begin to identify the important specific keywords for each page. Although hundreds or more keywords can affect the ranking of the homepage, the top 50 to 100 of its keywords are usually focused on for optimization. It is understood that some of these keywords and phrases will overlap with those targeted for the category pages. The home page should feature the primary keywords used throughout the site, since this page is the most definitive and prominent area of the website.

The second level is category pages. There are many category pages on any big brand E-commerce website, and 5 or 10 keywords must be tracked for each. Cumulatively, that can add up to over 100 main keywords and phrases in all, just for category pages alone.

Thirdly, the subcategory level must be addressed. Every website has a varied number of subcategories, ranging anywhere from a couple dozen all the way up to thousands. For sites with a small amount of subcategories, each subcategory page can be tracked individually for its top 5 to 10 keyword phrases. This technique mimics that of the category level.

For sites with a larger number of subcategories, a sampling strategy should be implemented. With this method, subcategories are segmented into three classes: most popular, moderately popular, and least popular. Around 200 keywords are then identified from each class.

Finally, the products pages are the fourth level of the keyword optimization process; these are handled using the specific long tailed keywords.

Why SEO Services Are Essential

This is merely the groundwork put into place to initiate the testing and continuous re-tweaking of keyword placement and usage. This does not even begin to delve into the SEO tools to glean information on keyword performance used or how to analyze the data collected. Clearly, revealing the complexity of the process can demonstrate to the client why an expert SEO consultant with previous experience in optimizing big brand E-commerce websites is entirely essential in order for traffic and conversion results to be maximized.

How to Become a Local SEO Consultant

Local SEO and web marketing consulting is one of the hottest career fields to re-emerge in today's new economy.

If you're even remotely thinking of buying into any one of the plethora of make money with offline 'gold' riches type programs, I want to warn you not to buy or subscribe to any SEO or offline consulting program. At least not until you've read this revealing report.

When I first began looking for ways to enter the SEO consulting field, I read story after story of 'every day' people making $1,500 to $5,000 a day selling their online SEO marketing skills to local offline businesses. I ran out and got my hands on just about every SEO and consulting workbook, guidebook, report, and video that promised to teach 'insider' secrets.

But once I read all that stuff and came back out of the ether...reality set in. All those SEO and consulting products fell short on their promises in three big ways.

Failing to recognize those challenges can lead to untold frustration and wasted energy. Not to mention the cost of lost opportunities.

This article deals with the first challenge; finding high-quality potential SEO clients quickly.

Most 'offline gold' type SEO programs require would-be consultants to spend countless hours running around chasing business people who don't know them, don't trust them, and don't want to talk with them.

Go through the high-rejection motion of cold calling and chasing enough complete strangers and you'll soon find yourself feeling like a gerbil on a treadmill -- expending a lot of effort but not really going anywhere.

How do you overcome this image of being 'just another salesperson'?

First you need to target and uncover high-probability SEO clients -- before you speak to anyone.

One way is to grab the yellow page directories and go online. Check the SEO web ranking of as many of the companies in your area for their likely keyword combinations as possible. See how well the companies rank for your city, county, and state. You want to know which sites are ranked well from an SEO standpoint and which aren't.

Automating this process of SEO ranking many sites at once is the quickest way to find potential SEO clients who actually need offline services. If you have tools to automate the process, great. But if not you can still do the SEO pre-qualifying steps by hand too. It will just take longer.

"Getting Paid"

Some offline consulting programs say to just walk into any business and ask "how's business," hoping the owner will start a conversation complaining about how bad life is. But that's not going to happen.

Only the most depressed and disgruntled will tell a customer the truth. All other business owners will lie so customers think the business is doing well. So instead of walking out with a big fat check you walk out with egg on your face looking like an idiot because you had nowhere to go in the conversation after the owner lied about business being great.

To walk out with a big fat SEO client check in hand you must walk in with something specific to talk to the companies about i.e. their exact poor search engine ranking and proof you can beat what they are already doing.

"Not Another Slimy 'Snake Oil' Sales Person"

After you've searched in advance and determined a site's SEO ranking, you next need to position yourself to avoid being viewed as an unwelcome pest. You want the prospective SEO client to see you as a welcome guest.

How? Not by cold calling every business in town and trying to sell your widget to everyone in arms reach.

Instead you contact companies intelligently. Determine what's important to them about getting the improved SEO ranking for their site.

And never ever go into a business and try to 'pitch' your services without knowing in advance a specific SEO marketing need truly exists.

You'll create resistance because the 'pitch man' approach is antiquated. And is associated with snake oil days of scam sales reps who promised everything and anything to get a sales, only to end up ripping people off.

In this day and age prospects are more informed than ever. The moment a business person detects 'sales speak' a defensive wall goes up. They begin to mistrust you. Your goal is to determine SEO and web marketing needs of the business, from the buyer's perspective.

Instead of 'pitching' your services be sincere, honest, and ethical. Focus on sincerely helping people. This will set you apart from all the con artists and snake oil dealers.

"Instant Expert.... Just Add Credibility..."

To be believed you must position yourself as a local expert, not approach businesses as just another sales person.

Do whatever it takes to ethically and legally remove the image of being a self-centered, commission-chasing sales rep. That way once you have completed your research and are finally face-to-face with a business owner or decision maker, you've placed yourself one step closer to entering what is likely the hottest career field to emerge in quite some time -- SEO and Web Marketing Consulting.

SEO Consulting For Big Brand Companies

An SEO consultant when selecting between different SEO services for big brand websites should apply meticulous planning and proven strategies that must be tailored to the specific needs of every web site.

1 - Establish your Authority:

Big brand web sites must establish their expertise in the field they are serving. Authority is recognized by both human visitors and search engine spiders by proving that their websites are the source of valuable information in their fields. Big brand websites must contain many pages dedicated mainly to providing useful knowledge to their clients. It can be in the form of a glossary of terms, frequently asked questions or tips and advices to their customers. The content of these pages must be of high quality and perfectly optimized for different keywords.

2 - Create semantic theming and siloing:

It is vital to create semantic theming for big brand websites by rearranging their pages and their internal link structure to represent clear categories that can be easily recognizable by both human visitors and search engine spiders.

An SEO consultant should divide the pages of the website into categories or groups. Each category must contain pages with closely related subjects and keywords. For each category there should be an index page where all the other pages of the same category will link to and the category index page will link back to them. Each category index page must have at least 5 - 10 pages from the same category pointing links to it with different relevant keywords as anchor text for these links.

Each category index page will link to the home page and the home page will link back to this category index page. You can create cross links between pages of the same category, but not between pages of different categories.

This type of internal link arrangement will increase the topical relevance of every page and improve its search engine rankings.

3 - Review and clean out pages that are off topic:

After establishing the theming structure of the website, review every page and rewrite it removing all information that is not related to the specific topic or category where this page belongs to.

4 - Number of indexed pages and content:

SEO Consultants should match the amount of indexed pages and their content in big brand web sites to the amount of indexed pages and their content in the competitor's websites. If the pages of the competitor's websites have 500 words each, you should not have only 100 words in each of your pages. Your competitor's websites will look more authoritative.

5 - On-page optimization:

Proper on-page optimization will put the most relevant keywords where the search engine spiders go looking. Use long-tailed keywords as frequently as possible in the different pages according to the semantic theming of the website.

Using links in the footer of the pages is an effective method to strengthen the anchor text for the main pages and enhance the themic structure of the whole website.

9 - Finish on-page optimization before starting off-page optimization:

Do not attempt to do any off page search engine optimization before you finish on-page optimization to a reasonable level. First fix the content and internal linking structure as much as you can. It does not make any sense to get more potential customers or search engine spiders visiting a big website which is completely messed up.

10 - Build high quality back links:

One of the biggest challenges to any SEO consultant is to acquire high quality back links from respectable sites. SEO consultants must avoid buying links that will lose its value over time. They should concentrate most of their energy on getting such links from relevant websites and ask for anchor text relevant to their subjects.
